A former New York Assembly Speaker has been brought to justice after a long and grueling investigation.
Sheldon Silver, 71, was found guilty of corruption in a New York courtroom. The defendant was accused of accepting millions of dollars in bribes from real estate developers and a cancer researcher in exchange for political favors.
The corruption charges against Silver include: honest services wire fraud, honest services mail fraud, and extortion under color of official right. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York alleged that Silver engaged in a long-running scheme to enrich himself through his official position.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Silver accepted $4 million in bribes from real estate developers in exchange for using his influence to secure tax breaks and other benefits for their projects. He also accepted $1 million in bribes from a cancer researcher in exchange for using his influence to secure grants and other benefits for the researcher’s business.
Silver was first arrested on November 1, 2014, and was later convicted of the corruption charges on November 30, 2015.
On October 2, 2015, U.S. District Judge Valerie Caproni sentenced Sheldon Silver to 12 years in prison.
Today, Sheldon Silver got justice, and at long last, so did the people of New York.
