A brazen case of corruption has come to an end as Yang Chia Tien, a 62-year-old Queens resident, was sentenced to 69 months in federal prison for bribing a public official.
Tien, also known as Andrew Tien, made three payments totaling $51,000 to a person he believed to be an immigration official in an attempt to obtain green cards for illegal aliens from Malaysia and China.
However, what Tien didn’t know was that the recipient of the payments was an undercover law enforcement officer with Homeland Security Investigations.
The investigation, a joint effort between ICE-Homeland Security Investigations and the New York State Police, resulted in Tien’s conviction on three counts of bribery of a public official.
Tien was found guilty by a federal jury in Albany on November 14, 2013. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sean O’Dowd.
According to court records, Tien’s actions were a serious breach of trust and a clear abuse of power. His sentence reflects the severity of his crimes and serves as a warning to others who would seek to exploit the system for personal gain.
Yang Chia Tien’s case is a reminder that corruption will not be tolerated in our society. We must remain vigilant in our pursuit of justice and continue to work tirelessly to root out corruption in all its forms.
Chief United States District Judge Gary L. Sharpe handed down the sentence, while United States Attorney Richard S. Hartunian, Homeland Security Investigations Assistant Special Agent in Charge Nicholas DiNicola, and New York State Police Special Investigations Unit Major Thomas G. Marmion also weighed in on the case.
