
Shifthan Shagabaev, 42, a Brooklyn, New York resident, has been convicted of student loan fraud in West Virginia.
Shagabaev admitted to making a fraudulent statement on a student loan application in Jefferson County, West Virginia in December 2012, according to a guilty plea entered in federal court.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul T. Camilletti, who was assisted by the United States Department of Education in the investigation. U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Trumble presided over the case.
Shagabaev faces up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The actual sentence will be determined by the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account the seriousness of the offense and any prior criminal history.
The conviction is the latest in a series of high-profile cases targeting student loan fraud in West Virginia. The state has been at the forefront of efforts to crack down on the crime, which can leave students with crippling debt and financial burdens.
