Shiotah Buckman, Meth Trafficking Conspiracy, South Dakota 2022

A Pine Ridge woman’s involvement in a methamphetamine trafficking ring has landed her behind bars for nearly four years.

On February 2021, Shiotah Buckman, 22, was indicted by a federal grand jury for her role in a Conspiracy to Distribute a Controlled Substance, specifically methamphetamine.

According to court documents, Buckman obtained the illicit substance brought into the area by others and then distributed it to others for use and further distribution. It was reasonably foreseeable that between 350-500 grams of methamphetamine would be distributed during the course of the conspiracy, primarily in the Pine Ridge area.

Buckman pleaded guilty to the indictment on May 20, 2022. She was subsequently sentenced on September 9, 2022 by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier to three years and 10 months in federal prison, followed by four years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

The case was investigated by the Badlands Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force, which is comprised of agents from the FBI, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, Bureau of Indian Affairs Division of Drug Enforcement, Martin Police Department, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn N. Rich prosecuted the case.

Buckman was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

The 350-500 grams of methamphetamine distributed during the conspiracy is a significant amount, and the sentence handed down by Judge Schreier reflects the severity of the crime.
