A Dulce man has been indicted for assault and kidnapping in Indian Country.
Shondo DeJesus, 35, of Dulce, New Mexico, was arraigned on a two-count indictment charging him with assault resulting in serious bodily injury and kidnapping in Indian Country, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico.
The alleged crimes took place on the Jicarilla Apache Reservation, where both DeJesus and the victim are enrolled members of the Jicarilla Apache Tribe.
According to the indictment, DeJesus allegedly assaulted the victim, identified as Jane Doe, at his home in Dulce on March 5. He then allegedly kept her in the home against her will until March 7.
DeJesus will remain in custody pending trial, which has not been scheduled. The Jicarilla Police Department investigated the case.
Assistant United States Attorney Brittany DuChaussee is prosecuting the case.
An indictment is only an allegation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
If convicted, DeJesus faces up to 10 years in prison for assault resulting in serious bodily injury and up to life in prison for kidnapping.
