⏱ 2 min read

Cody Laweka, a 35-year-old enrolled member of the Pueblo of Zuni, fired a shotgun at an occupied vehicle parked outside a home on the Zuni Pueblo on the evening of February 2, 2025. Laweka had driven to the residence with another person, who had a shotgun in the truck bed, and asked to use it. After firing at least two shots at the car, Laweka fled the scene with the other person. No one was hit by the gunshots.

The FBI investigated the incident and apprehended Laweka the following day at another home in Zuni. During an interview, Laweka admitted to firing the shotgun and tossing it along the highway. Despite a search, the shotgun was never found.

Laweka pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon and using a firearm during a crime of violence. He was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison, with no parole, and will be subject to three years of supervised release after his sentence. The court also recommended that Laweka complete the Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP) while in prison.

The case was investigated by the Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office, with assistance from the Pueblo of Zuni Police Department. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Special Agent in Charge Justin A. Garris announced the sentencing.
