SHREVEPORT, La. – Terrell Kellum, 29, of Shreveport, was sentenced to 57 months in federal prison and three years of supervised release for the felony possession of two handguns. This sentence comes after Kellum’s conviction for carrying two .380 caliber Lorcin Model L380 pistols, a violation of his rights as a previously convicted felon.
On November 6, 2015, a concerned citizen tipped off law enforcement about an individual seen with the firearms near Linwood and 70th Street in Shreveport. The information led to a traffic stop by a Shreveport police officer, who discovered the concealed weapons during a search of the vehicle.
U.S. District Judge Elizabeth E. Foote presided over Kellum’s sentencing, noting that his illegal possession posed a serious threat to public safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan S. Drucker represented the government in this case, which was part of the Department of Justice’s Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative aimed at curbing firearm crimes.
The ATF and Shreveport Police Department worked together to investigate and bring charges against Kellum. The successful prosecution underscores the commitment of federal law enforcement to reduce gun violence in communities like Shreveport.
Project Safe Neighborhoods is a national effort that promotes public safety by preventing, identifying, and reducing violent crime and associated firearms trafficking. It focuses on removing illegal guns from circulation and ensuring that those who commit crimes do not have access to firearms.
For Kellum, this sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of illegal gun possession and the collaborative efforts of federal and local law enforcement in tackling such issues.
