Don Siegelman, Bribery, Alabama 2006

Former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman was sentenced to 78 months in prison for his role in a bribery scheme involving former HealthSouth CEO Richard M. Scrushy.

Siegelman was originally convicted by a federal jury in June 2006 of seven counts of an indictment, including bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services mail fraud, honest services mail fraud and obstruction of justice.

In June 2007, Siegelman began serving a prison term on those convictions, but was released on bond in March 2008, pending an appeal in which two honest services mail fraud counts were reversed.

However, all of the five remaining counts were upheld in two opinions of the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court denied further appellate review.

Siegelman stands convicted of bribery, conspiracy and honest services mail fraud arising from a scheme in which Scrushy paid $500,000 to control a seat on the state regulatory board governing HealthSouth.

The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Mark Fuller in Montgomery, Ala., who also ordered Siegelman to serve three years of supervised release and to pay a $50,000 fine.

Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer praised the outcome of the case, saying it reflects the commitment to holding public officials accountable for corruption.

Acting U.S. Attorney Louis V. Franklin Sr. described the sentence as a welcomed step toward closure to a dark chapter in Alabama politics.
