A Silver Spring tax preparer has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for making a false statement on a tax return, announced the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland.
Alejandra A. Salas, 65, was found to have underreported income from his tax preparation business on both his individual and corporate tax returns from 2004 to 2009.
The tax loss to the government as a result of Salas’ actions is $393,018, according to court documents.
Salas, who owned G&S Enterprises of Maryland, a tax preparation business in Silver Spring, also offered translation services, travel agency services, accounting and bookkeeping services for local companies, facilitated international money transfers, and brokered mortgage loans.
Between 2004 and 2009, Salas’ business prepared over 15,700 tax returns for clients.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein praised the IRS-CI for its work in the investigation and thanked Assistant U.S. Attorney Sujit Raman, who prosecuted the case.
Salas was also ordered to pay $393,018 in restitution and perform 100 hours of community service.
Thomas J. Kelly, Special Agent in Charge of the IRS-CI, warned others that IRS-CI will continue to pursue individuals and businesses that do not pay all the taxes owed to the U.S. treasury.
