Buffalo, N.Y. – A chilling case of child exploitation emerges as 24-year-old Ronald Caryl of Silver Springs, NY, faces federal charges for receipt of child pornography.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in New York announced that Caryl was arrested and charged with the serious offense. The act carries a dire consequence, with a minimum sentence of five years to a maximum of 20 years in prison.
According to Assistant U.S. Prosecutor Aaron J. Mango, Caryl’s sinister activities began online when he communicated with a woman on MeetMe.com, offering $300 for sexual services and ultimately soliciting explicit images of her one-year-old daughter.
When the woman expressed concern over the legality and safety of involving a minor, Caryl persisted, pressing the issue and offering to pay even more. The conversation revealed Caryl’s desire to view the child, revealing his sinister intent.
The situation took a serious turn when a concerned MeetMe.com staff member recognized the potential endangerment of a minor and illegal content, prompting them to contact the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The FBI traced the content back to Caryl’s IP address, leading to his arrest.
Caryl appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah J. McCarthy today and has been detained pending a detention hearing on March 2nd. This investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation with assistance from local law enforcement agencies in Wyoming County, Cheektowaga, and Niagara County.
The case serves as a stark reminder that the internet is no sanctuary for pedophiles; law enforcement remains vigilant in protecting our children online.
