Sioux City Man Jailed for 13+ Years for Gun-Toting Pot Deal
Fredrick Perkins, 32, has been sentenced to 13 years and 3 months in federal prison for possessing a firearm in furtherance of distributing marijuana.
Perkins, who pleaded guilty in 2019, was sentenced by United States District Court Chief Judge Leonard T. Strand after a search of his home uncovered a handgun, loaded magazine, and large quantities of marijuana.
According to court documents, the Sioux City Police Department searched Perkins’ home in response to suspected drug-related activity. Perkins initially lied about the presence of firearms, but officers found a stolen handgun and 17 rounds of 9mm ammunition. The evidence also revealed $2,114 in cash and large quantities of marijuana.
Perkins’ lengthy criminal history includes convictions for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, receiving/possessing/selling a stolen vehicle, aggravated battery on a government official, and delivery of cannabis.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime. PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with local prevention and reentry programs.
Perkins will serve a five-year term of supervised release after his prison term. The case was investigated by the Sioux City Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Forde Fairchild. Perkins is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
