A Sioux Falls man is facing a lengthy sentence for his role in a methamphetamine distribution ring.
Edward Ward, 52, was sentenced to 16 years and 8 months in federal prison followed by 5 years of supervised release for his part in a conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance. He was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The sentencing took place on April 22, 2024, in U.S. District Court before Judge Karen E. Schreier. Ward was previously indicted by a federal grand jury in March 2023 for his alleged involvement in the conspiracy.
According to the DOJ, Ward obtained methamphetamine from a co-conspirator in California via mail and redistributed it in South Dakota. In a series of controlled purchases orchestrated by law enforcement, Ward sold approximately 19.5 ounces of methamphetamine to a confidential informant between May 3 and May 26, 2022.
Records show Ward was personally involved in the handling and distribution of approximately 100 pounds of methamphetamine during his involvement in the conspiracy. The DEA and the Sioux Falls Police Department led the investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Hodges prosecuting the case.
Ward was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service following his sentencing. The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against methamphetamine distribution in the region and the consequences of involvement in such illicit activities.
This case serves as a testament to the determination of law enforcement agencies in South Dakota to combat the scourge of methamphetamine in the community. The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to work tirelessly to hold accountable those who engage in such destructive behavior.
Ward’s involvement in the conspiracy has significant implications for public safety in the region. His lengthy sentence is a stark reminder that those involved in the distribution of methamphetamine will face severe consequences.
As the investigation into this case continues, the U.S. Attorney’s Office remains committed to seeking justice for the victims of methamphetamine-related crimes.
