A 29-year-old woman from Montague, California has pleaded guilty to aggravated ID theft in a scheme to steal from banks and merchants in Siskiyou County. Stacy Miranda Phillips admitted to working with others to steal mail and use the contents to obtain cash and purchase items.
Between September and December 2015, Phillips targeted postal customers and mail receptacles in Siskiyou County, stealing mail from post offices in Hornbrook, Grenada, and Montague. She used the stolen mail to obtain cash and purchase items using credit or debit cards, account numbers, names, PINs, and signatures.
Phillips even attempted to open a line of credit in the name of a Weed, California victim. The scheme was part of a larger bank fraud and identity theft operation that took place in Siskiyou County.
Assistant United States Attorney Michelle Rodriguez is prosecuting the case, which is the product of an investigation by the United States Postal Inspection Service, the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Department, and the Yreka Police Department.
Phillips is scheduled for sentencing on July 28, 2016, before U.S. District Judge Troy L. Nunley. She faces a mandatory minimum sentence of two years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The actual sentence will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables.
Phillips’ guilty plea marks a significant blow to the operation, which had been causing harm to victims in Siskiyou County.
The investigation and prosecution of this case are a testament to the dedication of law enforcement agencies in Siskiyou County to protecting the community from financial crimes.
