Jose Santos Pardo, Fentanyl Smuggling, Florida 2024

Homestead’s Jose Santos Pardo, 25, was meted out a severe penalty today as he received a 14-month federal prison sentence for his devious act of smuggling fentanyl and other contraband into the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex (FCC Coleman). The sentencing by United States District Judge Thomas P. Barber marks a significant win in the fight against prison corruption.

Pardo, who pleaded guilty on March 25, 2025, was caught red-handed after a correctional officer noticed him running with bags along the roadside of FCC Coleman. Upon closer inspection, the contents of the duffle bags and trash bag proved to be a dangerous cache of drugs, tobacco, alcohol, and cellphones.

The night of November 19, 2022, would mark a turning point for Pardo when he admitted to picking up the bags from the road with intentions of bringing them back to his housing unit. Possession of such items is strictly forbidden as they pose a threat to the order, discipline, and security of the prison, not to mention the life, health, and safety of inmates and staff.

Investigation into Pardo’s crime was a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Prisons. Assistant United States Attorney Hannah Nowalk Watson handled the prosecution with determination, ensuring that justice was served.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by correctional facilities in maintaining security against those who attempt to infiltrate the system for their own gain. It also highlights the relentless efforts of law enforcement agencies in protecting federal prisoners and staff from harm.

Jose Santos Pardo’s sentence sends a strong message that prison smuggling will not be tolerated, and those caught will face the full brunt of the law.
