In a shocking turn of events, Superintendent Thomas A. Wolfe of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company’s Pier B, located at the foot of York Street in Jersey City, was arrested on the evening of September 13, 1905, and subjected to a humiliating search by two customs officers. The officers, acting on suspicions of smuggling, accused Wolfe of interfering with their duties, but a thorough search revealed nothing incriminating on his person. Wolfe was held in custody, awaiting an appearance before United States Commissioner Lumsley, who ultimately dismissed the complaint.
