In a brazen heist, seven convicts escaped from the State prison in Auburn, New York, on January 8, 1873. The prisoners, who were all supposed to have been provided with civilian clothes, managed to dig through the wall of their cellblock, using a shaft that had been installed for the purpose of turning the prison’s machinery. Authorities believe that the convicts received assistance from the outside, as the escape was seemingly too well-planned to have been carried out alone. The escapees made their move around 8 o’clock in the afternoon, and it’s reported that the boatmen are optimistic about recapturing the fugitives, despite the icy grip of the winter weather that’s gripping the area. The authorities are currently on high alert as they search for the escaped convicts.
