Somerset Man Indicted for Fentanyl-Linked Death

Newark, N.J. – In a stark reminder of the deadly consequences of fentanyl distribution, federal prosecutors have charged Somerset County’s Thomas Kane Miller with distributing drugs that led to the death of a victim.

The 40-year-old was indicted by a federal grand jury on multiple counts, including possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and heroin, as well as the distribution of those substances that resulted in death. His initial court appearance is set for June 30, 2025.

“The fentanyl epidemic has shattered countless lives, leaving families in pain,” U.S. Attorney Alina Habba declared. “This office will not waver in its pursuit of justice, ensuring those who traffic these deadly drugs are held accountable.”

The DEA’s New York Special Agent in Charge Frank Tarentino echoed Habba’s sentiments: “Mr. Miller’s actions resulted in a tragic loss of life. The DEA is committed to holding such individuals responsible.”

Documents and court statements reveal that Miller distributed fentanyl and heroin to an individual who died in October 2022. Law enforcement linked the drugs to Miller through unique stamps found at the scene. They also discovered Miller had previously distributed the substances on other occasions, including two incidents in December 2022 and January 2023.

The charges against Miller carry significant penalties, with a mandatory minimum of 20 years’ imprisonment for the death-related count and up to life imprisonment and a $1 million fine for each of the others. U.S. Attorney Habba credited law enforcement agencies for their relentless efforts in combating drug trafficking.
