A 33-year-old man from Brighton, Colorado, has been sentenced to 90 months in prison for his role in a gun incident that left a bystander injured at the Gaylord Hotel in Aurora.
Sonny Perez, 33, pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute 40 grams and more of a mixture and substance containing fentanyl and one count of possession of ammunition by a convicted felon.
According to the plea agreement, on May 29, 2023, Perez was at the Gaylord Hotel in Aurora to sell methamphetamine. Security footage showed that when Perez exited the hotel, he had his right hand in his pants pocket.
Individuals outside the hotel reported hearing a loud sound and seeing a bystander with blood dripping down his leg. The bystander received medical treatment for a gunshot wound to the leg.
Investigators traced Perez to his home, where they found narcotics, evidence of drug distribution, and ammunition. Perez has a prior felony conviction and is prohibited from possessing ammunition.
‘Felons should be on notice—they will face long sentences if they continue to arm themselves,’ said Acting United States Attorney for the District of Colorado Matt Kirsch.
