A $103,318 theft from the Department of Veteran Affairs landed a 5-year sentence for a local woman.
Sophia McGadney, a resident of Alabama, was found guilty of violating 18 USC § 641, Theft of Government Funds, on August 4, 2017.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama, McGadney, who shared a bank account with her grandmother, continued to receive the funds after her grandmother’s death.
The funds in question were veteran benefits that were directly deposited into the account shared by McGadney and her grandmother.
McGadney transferred the funds each month from the joint account to a new account she had opened in her own name.
The total amount of loss resulting from this theft is $103,318, not including additional interest that was accrued over the 5-year period.
The Veteran Affairs Office of the Inspector General investigated this case, with Assistant United States Attorney Christopher Baugh prosecuting the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama.
McGadney’s sentence includes five years of probation and repayment of the total amount of loss.
