CHICAGO – A brazen, open-air drug market operating in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood has been dismantled, with seven individuals now facing serious federal charges. The operation, shielded by armed security, allegedly peddled massive amounts of marijuana and stashed drugs, firearms, and cash in nearby residences. This isn’t just a drug bust; it’s a clear illustration of how easily illegal activity can escalate when combined with readily available firepower on our streets.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, in concert with the Chicago Police Department, U.S. Secret Service, and U.S. Marshals Service, brought down the ring following a lengthy investigation. Authorities seized approximately 2,000 pounds of marijuana, a staggering 81 firearms – including five assault-style rifles – roughly $425,000 in cash, and jewelry valued at around $300,000. This wasn’t some small-time operation; this was a sophisticated criminal enterprise built on profit and protected by force.
Charged with federal drug conspiracy are KEJUAN BRYANT, 31, of Chicago; JAMARI GOODMAN, 29, of Chicago; JOSEPH ALBERT HEATH, 32, of Chicago; MATTHEW FURDGE, 22, of Chicago; KEWANN WHITAKER, 32, of Chicago; IGOR DZE, 44, of Miami Beach, Fla.; and KHIRY STRICKLAND, 34, of Lemont, Ill. BRYANT is facing an additional charge of drug distribution, and alongside GOODMAN and HEATH, is accused of illegally possessing firearms to further their drug trafficking activities. Most of the defendants were already in custody as of last week, having appeared in federal court.
This federal takedown isn’t operating in a vacuum. Fifteen additional individuals have been charged in state court as a direct result of this ongoing investigation, signaling a coordinated effort to scrub the South Side clean. The charges were announced by U.S. Attorney Andrew S. Boutros for the Northern District of Illinois, along with key law enforcement leaders, highlighting the interagency cooperation that made this bust possible.
The federal case is part of “Operation Take Back America,” a nationwide initiative aimed at dismantling violent crime and organized criminal networks. This operation leverages resources from the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) to maximize impact. The Chicago High Intensity Drug Trafficking Task Force (HIDTA) and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office also provided valuable assistance.
It’s crucial to remember that an indictment represents accusations, not proof of guilt. Each defendant is presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial. However, the potential consequences are severe. BRYANT faces up to life in federal prison if convicted of the drug conspiracy, while GOODMAN, FURDGE, WHITAKER, DZE, and STRICKLAND could each receive up to forty years. The firearm charge against BRYANT, GOODMAN, and HEATH carries a maximum sentence of life, with a mandatory minimum of five years. BRYANT’s individual drug distribution count is punishable by up to 20 years. Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Schied is handling the federal prosecution.
