Grimy Times has learned that Southwest Airlines is facing allegations of racial contract discrimination in a lawsuit filed by the American Alliance for Equal Rights. According to the allegations, the 2024 ¡Lánzate!/Take Off! Travel Award Program, which offered free Southwest Airlines flight vouchers to college and graduate students, only allowed Hispanic students to apply.
The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas, alleges that by denying non-Hispanic students the opportunity to apply for the program on the basis of their race or ethnicity, Southwest Airlines’ program facially discriminated against non-Hispanic students in violation of 42 U.S.C. § 1981.
On [March 26, 2024], the Justice Department filed a proposed statement of interest in support of the American Alliance for Equal Rights’ lawsuit, affirming its commitment to eradicating racially exclusionary practices across the government and in the private sector.
“Every person in the United States should have equal and nondiscriminatory rights to make and enforce contracts, and race should never be a consideration,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Civil Rights Division. “The Justice Department is working to end discrimination using all of the tools at our disposal.”
Southwest Airlines, a major airline with operations across the United States, has not commented on the allegations. However, the airline’s actions have raised concerns about the company’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
