In a shocking turn of events, Mary Jo Flammond, a/k/a Mary Jo Waln, a 32-year-old St. Francis woman, pleaded guilty to Involuntary Manslaughter in a South Dakota court yesterday. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 8 years in custody, a $250,000 fine, or both; 3 years of supervised release; and a $100 special assessment.

The conviction stems from an incident that took place on September 6, 2012, when Flammond was driving under the influence of alcohol. A presentence investigation was ordered. A sentencing date has not been set. The defendant was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshal pending sentencing.

Flammond’s guilty plea has sent shockwaves throughout the St. Francis community, with many calling for tougher penalties for drunk driving.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence and the devastating consequences that can result from such reckless behavior.
