Matthew Ortega, Armed Robbery, Missouri 2023

A St. Louis County convenience store was held up at gunpoint in 2023, and the perpetrator has finally faced justice.

Matthew Ortega, a 34-year-old man from St. Louis County, Missouri, pleaded guilty to one count of robbery and one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence in U.S. District Court in St. Louis on Thursday.

Details of the crime paint a chilling picture: Ortega pointed a Glock handgun at the clerk of a convenience store and gas station on Hillsboro-House Springs Road in Jefferson County, Missouri, and demanded money from the cash register. He was wearing a distinctive motorcycle helmet and riding a Suzuki motorcycle at the time of the robbery.

Three days after the heist, Ortega was involved in an accident while riding the same motorcycle, wearing the same helmet and hard knuckle motorcycle gloves. Police later recovered the gun he used in the robbery.

Ortega’s plea deal, which includes a recommended 11-year prison sentence, is set to be finalized on September 18. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicholas Lake prosecuting the case.

The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and communities. By fostering trust, supporting community-based organizations, and setting strategic enforcement priorities, PSN works to make neighborhoods safer for everyone.

Ortega’s sentence will bring a measure of closure to the victims of this crime and serve as a reminder that justice will catch up with those who commit violent crimes. The Grimy Times will continue to monitor this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
