A federal jury in the Eastern District of Missouri has convicted James Frederick Johnson, 35, of St. Louis, Missouri, of trafficking fentanyl, a highly addictive synthetic opioid.
According to court documents, Johnson was arrested in 2025 and charged with one count of trafficking fentanyl, a Schedule II controlled substance. The indictment alleged that Johnson knowingly and intentionally distributed a substantial quantity of fentanyl, resulting in serious injury and death.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Gwendolyn Eleanor Carroll and Kyle Timothy Bateman, with support from the DEA’s St. Louis Division. Sanford J. Boxerman represented Johnson during the trial.
U.S. District Judge Rodney W. Sippel presided over the case, which was tried in the Eastern District of Missouri. The jury deliberated for several hours before delivering a guilty verdict against Johnson.
Johnson faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million. He is currently being held in the Eastern District of Missouri Detention Center pending sentencing.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Missouri warns that fentanyl trafficking is a serious crime that can have devastating consequences. “Fentanyl is a highly addictive and deadly substance that is often laced into other drugs, making it nearly impossible for users to know what they are getting,” said U.S. Attorney Sayler A. Fleming. “Our office is committed to holding those who traffic fentanyl accountable for their actions.”
The case is part of the Department of Justice’s ongoing effort to combat the opioid epidemic and hold accountable those who contribute to it. Johnson is scheduled to be sentenced on [insert date] before Judge Sippel.
