Former Wilcox County Sheriff Stacy Bloodsworth Sentenced to 10 Years in Prison

A former sheriff in Georgia has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for assaulting an inmate and conspiring to cover up the assault. Stacy Bloodsworth, the former Wilcox County Sheriff, pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced on October 22, 2012.

The assault occurred on July 23, 2009, when Bloodsworth was inside the Wilcox County Jail with several other individuals. He ordered three inmates out of their cells because one of them reportedly had a cell phone, in violation of jail regulations. Bloodsworth hit all three inmates, and also watched as other participants struck and kicked the inmates.

One of the inmates suffered a broken jaw, which was later wired shut at a local hospital. The other two inmates suffered lacerations, bruising, and pain. Bloodsworth concocted a false cover story to cover up the involvement of law enforcement officials, including his son, Austin Bloodsworth, who was sentenced to 18 months in prison for conspiring to cover up the assault.

Four other individuals were also sentenced in connection with the assault and cover-up. Willie James Caruthers, a former inmate-trustee, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for assaulting the inmate. Timothy King Jr., a former South Central Georgia Drug Task Force Agent, was sentenced to 6 months in prison for conspiring to cover up the assault. Casey Owens, a former Wilcox County Jailer, was sentenced to probation for misprision of a felony.

The case was investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Georgia. The sentences handed down in this case bring closure to an alarming case, where those sworn to uphold the law now feel the full weight of it.
