A Stamford man has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for running a brazen computer networking parts scheme that cost Cisco Systems hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Craig A. Stanland, 40, was found guilty of mail fraud and sentenced to 24 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for obtaining hundreds of computer networking parts from Cisco Systems.
Stanland, who used aliases such as “Alan Johnston,” “Kyle Booker,” and “Steve Jones,” purchased or controlled 18 service contracts for Cisco networking parts and made false service requests to replace purportedly defective parts.
Based on these requests, Cisco shipped replacement parts to various addresses at Stanland’s direction, including his home in Stamford, his wife’s business in Brooklyn, N.Y., and two post office boxes in Greenwich.
Stanland sold the new parts to third parties to enrich himself, while allegedly returning no parts or off-brand parts to Cisco.
Through his scheme, Stanland fraudulently obtained nearly 600 parts from Cisco, with a total retail cost ranging from $500 to $8,600 and a total loss to Cisco of approximately $834,307.
The investigation revealed that Stanland spent some of the money he stole at high-end restaurants in Fairfield County and New York.
Stanland was ordered to make full restitution to Cisco and pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud on January 22, 2014.
