Steele Sentenced for Domestic Assault
Little Eagle, South Dakota – In a shocking turn of events, Robert Steele, a 53-year-old man from Little Eagle, South Dakota, was sentenced to 18 months of custody for Domestic Assault by a Habitual Offender.
According to court documents, Steele was convicted of the crime after a Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) officer responded to a call on February 19, 2013, regarding an assault on an adult female victim. The victim informed the officer that Steele had kicked her approximately 5-7 times, leaving her with visible injuries to her upper and lower lips.
Steele has a history of domestic assault, having been previously convicted of the crime in Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Court. His prior judgments were for offenses that would have been considered assault against a spouse or intimate partner if subject to federal jurisdiction.
Steele was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 12, 2013, and pleaded guilty on January 23, 2014. He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann on June 9, 2014.
As part of his sentence, Steele was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and serve 2 years of supervised release. He was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
The case was investigated by the BIA and the Standing Rock Law Enforcement Agency, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuting the case.
