Stephen Jay Thorn, Threatening a Federal Judge, Florida 2022

Pensacola Man Sentenced to 5 Years for Threatening Federal Judge, Family

Tampa, Florida – In a shocking display of disregard for the law, a Pensacola man has been sentenced to 5 years in federal prison for transmitting a threat to harm a federal judge and members of the judge’s immediate family.

According to court documents, on October 24, 2022, Stephen Jay Thorn (66, Pensacola), made five interstate telephone calls to the judge’s chambers and left vulgar, obscenity-laden voicemail messages threatening to harm the judge as well as members of the judge’s immediate family.

Thorn entered a guilty plea on May 16, 2024, and was subsequently sentenced by U.S. District Judge William F. Jung.

“Threatening harm against public officials, or their families, is an intolerable offense,” said U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg. “My office takes such threats seriously and is committed to investigating and federally prosecuting anyone who threatens this sort of violence.”

This case was investigated by the United States Marshals Service and was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Joe Wheeler III.

The harsh sentence handed down to Thorn serves as a stern warning to those who would seek to intimidate or harm public officials and their loved ones. It is a reminder that such threats will not be taken lightly and will be met with the full force of the law.

The investigation and prosecution of this case highlight the importance of holding those accountable who seek to undermine the rule of law and the safety of our communities.
