Two Men Sentenced for Attempting to Flee Police with Heroin and Cash
CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A pair of heroin dealers who tried to outrun the law in a vehicle loaded with drugs and cash have been sent to prison.
Stephen Michael Hopkins, 36, of Huntington, was sentenced on May 23 to 12 years and 7 months in prison for aiding and abetting the possession with intent to distribute heroin. His co-defendant, Eddie Daivon Morgan, 32, of Beckley, W.Va., received a 4-year prison sentence for using a cellular telephone to facilitate the possession with intent to distribute heroin.
On March 16, 2011, officers with the Charleston Police responded to a call near the 2600 block of 6th Avenue in Charleston. Upon arriving at the scene, officers approached Hopkins and Morgan, who were sitting inside a parked Dodge Charger. A responding officer ordered Hopkins and Morgan to step out of the vehicle, but Hopkins refused and drove away.
Officers pursued the defendants as they fled the scene, eventually crashing at the intersection of 7th Street and Iowa Street in Charleston. Hopkins and Morgan attempted to flee on foot but were apprehended by officers a short time later. A search of the vehicle revealed a plastic bag containing $10,920 in cash, suspected heroin, and marijuana. The suspected heroin was later confirmed to be 26.6 grams of heroin.
The Charleston Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant United States Attorney Monica D. Coleman handled the prosecutions. United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver Jr. imposed the sentences.
Hopkins and Morgan’s actions demonstrate the devastating consequences of heroin distribution in our community. Their sentences should serve as a warning to those who would seek to profit from the pain and suffering of others.
