Stephen Warren, Possessing Unregistered Firearm, Maine 2020

Bangor, Maine, February 7, 2023: An Old Town man pleaded guilty today in federal court in Bangor to possessing an unregistered firearm, Acting U.S. Attorney Donald E. Clark announced. The crime occurred nearly three years ago.

Stephen Warren, 37, was pulled over by the Old Town Police on September 8, 2020, after ignoring a protection order and driving away from the area with a suspended license. He was issued a summons for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and served with a protection order. However, Warren ignored this order and drove away from the area, prompting a brief pursuit by officers before he was eventually stopped and arrested.

A subsequent inventory search of Warren’s car revealed a short-barreled shotgun without a serial number that was not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record (NFRTR). Federal law prohibits the possession of a weapon made from a shotgun, if the modified weapon has a barrel less than 18 inches in length or an overall length of less than 26 inches, unless that weapon is registered to the possessor in the NFRTR.

Warren faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He will be sentenced after the completion of a presentence investigation report by the U.S. Probation Office. A federal district court judge will determine any sentence after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Old Town Police investigated the case.
