A Steubenville, Ohio man has been indicted on a serious firearm charge after a federal grand jury in West Virginia found him guilty of unlawful firearm possession.
Thomas Bennett, 41, was indicted on one count of ‘Unlawful Possession of a Firearm’ by the grand jury in Wheeling, West Virginia.
The indictment alleges that Bennett, who was previously convicted of drug possession in Commons Pleas Court in Jefferson County, Ohio in 2017, possessed a 9mm pistol in Ohio County on August 12, 2017.
Bennett’s previous conviction in 2017 is a significant factor in the current indictment, as it makes him a prohibited person from possessing a firearm under federal law.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen L. Vogrin is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government, with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Wheeling Police Department conducting the investigation.
An indictment is merely an accusation, and Bennett is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
The case is a stark reminder of the importance of enforcing firearm laws in our community and holding those who break them accountable for their actions.
The indictment serves as a warning to others who may be tempted to engage in similar behavior: breaking firearm laws will not be tolerated, and those who do so will face the full force of the law.
