Federal Tax Cheat Sentenced to Prison
Steven A. Mills, a former real estate consultant from East Lansing, Michigan, pleaded guilty to filing a false individual income tax return with the IRS. Mills, formerly of East Lansing, is scheduled to be sentenced on June 14, 2023.
According to court documents, Mills managed Mills Real Estate Consulting LLC, a real estate consulting firm. For example, on his 2014 federal income tax return, Mills failed to report approximately $356,100 in payments made to Mills Real Estate Consulting LLC. This omission resulted in Mills filing a false tax return, a federal offense.
The case was investigated by the IRS-Criminal Investigation and is being prosecuted by Trial Attorneys Kenneth Vert and Jeffrey McLellan of the Tax Division, along with Assistant U.S. Attorney Ron Stella for the Western District of Michigan.
Mills faces up to three years in prison for filing a false tax return. In addition to prison time, he may also face a period of supervised release, restitution, and monetary penalties. The specific sentence will be determined by a federal district court judge after considering the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
