Attempted Enticement Of A Minor Lands Iowa Man Behind Bars
Davenport, IA – In a shocking display of depravity, a 53-year-old man from Oelwein, Iowa, was sentenced to 121 months in prison for attempting to entice a minor.
According to court records, Steven William Bentley, a self-employed businessman, engaged in a series of online chats with an undercover agent posing as a minor female between June 27, 2012, and July 25, 2012.
The evidence showed that Bentley, who was 53 at the time, arranged a meeting with the purported minor on July 19, 2012, and traveled to Eldridge, Iowa, to meet her. However, no meeting occurred.
Bentley returned on July 25, 2012, to meet the purported minor, but he was arrested shortly after arriving at the meeting location.
Chief United States District Judge James E. Gritzner handed down the sentence, ordering Bentley to serve 10 years of supervised release following his imprisonment and to pay $100 towards the Crime Victims Fund.
The case was investigated by the Iowa Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, the DeWitt, Iowa, Police Department, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, the Davenport, Iowa, Police Department, and the Eldridge, Iowa, Police Department.
The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa prosecuted the case.
