SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A night of wings turned into a nightmare for employees at the Stockton Fire Wings restaurant, as 51-year-old Douglas Sharron Piggee Jr. allegedly stormed the establishment wielding a loaded handgun. A federal grand jury slapped Piggee with a three-count indictment today, charging him with Hobbs Act Robbery, brandishing a firearm during a crime, and being a prohibited person in possession of ammunition, according to U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert.
The July 21, 2022 robbery saw Piggee allegedly threaten employees while brandishing a privately manufactured Polymer 80 Glock 19-style handgun. Court documents detail the brazen act, but fail to reveal the amount of money or goods taken. What *is* clear is that this wasn’t Piggee’s first rodeo with the law. He’s a convicted felon – not once, not twice, but *seven* times, including prior convictions for armed bank robbery and, ironically, being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Investigators from the San Joaquin County Sheriff Office, the FBI, and the ATF pieced together the case, linking Piggee to the scene. The evidence suggests a calculated act by a repeat offender. Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily G. Sauvageau is now tasked with building a case that will keep Piggee behind bars, potentially for life.
If convicted on all counts, Piggee is looking at a minimum of seven years in prison, and a maximum sentence of life behind bars. He also faces a potential $250,000 fine. However, sentencing is at the discretion of the court, taking into account federal guidelines and any mitigating factors. It’s a hefty penalty, but whether it’s enough to deter future crimes remains to be seen.
Prosecutors are framing this case as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. Launched in 2021, the revamped PSN strategy focuses on fostering trust with communities, supporting violence prevention programs, and prioritizing strategic enforcement. The program’s goal: safer streets and fewer victims.
It’s crucial to remember that these are merely allegations at this stage. Piggee is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it unfolds, bringing you the unvarnished truth from the courtroom and beyond. This indictment, however, paints a grim picture of a man with a history of violence and a blatant disregard for the law.
