CHEROKEE, IA – Roger Strickland, 62, of Cherokee, Iowa, is headed to federal prison after admitting to a sickening obsession with child pornography. Strickland was sentenced September 9, 2025, in federal court in Sioux City, Iowa, to 63 months behind bars – over five years – for two counts of possessing child pornography.
The investigation began to unravel when agents with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Cherokee Police Department executed a search warrant at Strickland’s home on May 25, 2023. Confronted with the evidence they were seeking – someone downloading child pornography – Strickland chillingly confessed, stating, “It’s me.” The initial search yielded a disturbing amount of illegal material, but the depravity didn’t stop there.
Even while under investigation and aware law enforcement was analyzing his electronic devices, Strickland continued his vile activity. Between August 2023 and February 2024, he actively received and possessed more child pornography. Forensic analysis revealed a staggering hoard: over 225 videos and a horrifying 8,000 images. The content wasn’t just exploitative; it included depictions of sadistic and masochistic acts involving prepubescent children, infants, and toddlers – a level of cruelty that defies description.
Assistant United States Attorney Kraig R. Hamit successfully prosecuted the case, presenting the damning evidence before United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand. In addition to the 63-month prison sentence, Strickland will serve a five-year term of supervised release upon his release. The federal system offers no parole, meaning Strickland will serve the full term. Furthermore, Judge Strand ordered Strickland to pay $39,000 in restitution to the victims depicted in the images and videos.
This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a national initiative launched in 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the epidemic of child sexual exploitation. The project brings together federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those who prey on children.
