General Motors, Labor Strike, Michigan 2024

In the midst of a 105-day-old labor standoff, the United Auto Workers (UAW) union is waiting with bated breath for a response from General Motors (GM) on its proposal to hold a worker referendum on the terms of the company’s latest offer. Over 175,000 production workers have been on strike since December, and tensions are running high. Union leaders R.J. Thomas, George Addes, and Walter P. Reuther have made it clear that they are willing to let the rank-and-file workers decide whether to accept the company’s latest offer, but only if the ballot also includes the option to submit issues to arbitration. This proposal was met with skepticism by the corporation, which had previously rejected the union’s offer to submit disputes to arbitration last Sunday.
