Escondido Man Pleads Guilty to Tax Evasion Scheme with Former Chabad of Poway Rabbi
Stuart Weinstock of Escondido, California, has admitted to participating in a years-long tax evasion scheme with former Chabad of Poway Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein.
According to court documents, Weinstock provided Rabbi Goldstein with at least $872,815 in checks between 2010 and 2018, which were fraudulently described as ‘contributions,’ ‘donations,’ or ‘business expenses.’
Rabbi Goldstein then secretly returned 75 percent of the money, approximately $654,611, to Weinstock, allowing him to evade over $100,000 in taxes.
Weinstock pleaded guilty to filing a false tax return as part of the scheme, which also involved the former Chabad of Poway director meeting with Weinstock in person to hand over cash.
As part of his plea agreement, Weinstock admitted that he understood Rabbi Goldstein’s warning in 2018 to stop accepting envelopes to be a sign that the rabbi was cooperating with law enforcement.
Rabbi Goldstein has already pleaded guilty to fraud charges and is scheduled to be sentenced on April 26, 2021.
U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer praised prosecutors Michelle Wasserman and Oleksandra Johnson, as well as FBI and IRS agents, for their work on the case.
