Stumbo, Walter Dale; Cockfighting, Virginia 2014
ABINGDON, VIRGINIA – Two individuals from Kentucky and a man from Virginia have accepted guilty pleas for their roles in a major cockfighting operation in McDowell, Kentucky.
Walter Dale Stumbo, 51, and his son, Joshua Dale Stumbo, 25, of Floyd County, Kentucky, each pled guilty to one count of conspiring to operate an illegal gambling enterprise and conduct cock fights.
Jonathan Robinson, 33, of Wise County, Virginia, also pled guilty to conspiring to operate an illegal gambling enterprise and conduct cock fights, as well as distributing oxycodone.
The Stumbos and Robinson face up to 50, 35, and 15 years in prison, respectively, and fines of up to $2.75 million, $1.75 million, and $750,000, respectively.
The operation, known as the Big Blue Sportsmen’s Club, was located in McDowell, Kentucky, and attracted spectators from multiple states.
Walter Dale Stumbo and Joshua Dale Stumbo are scheduled to be sentenced on October 9 and 14, 2014, respectively. Jonathan Robinson is scheduled to be sentenced on October 8, 2014.
United States Attorney Timothy Heaphy praised the law enforcement officers who conducted the undercover operation.
"The cruel and inhumane practice of cockfighting has no place in a civilized society and is against federal law," Heaphy said.
