Sedgwick Williams, Gunpoint Kidnappings, Illinois 2019

CHICAGO – The quiet veneer of Chicago’s suburbs was shattered in the fall of 2019 by a ruthless kidnapping spree, and now, two of the architects of that terror are facing life behind bars. A federal jury on May 22, 2024, convicted Sedgwick Williams, 47, of Chicago, and Tai Hon La, 34, of Beach Park, Ill., on charges stemming from a conspiracy to abduct multiple victims at gunpoint.

The evidence presented in court painted a chilling picture of calculated violence. The first kidnapping unfolded in Naperville on October 17, 2019. Williams and his crew, brazenly posing as law enforcement, handcuffed and abducted a man outside his electronics store. The store was promptly burglarized, and the victim was transported to a vacant Chicago unit where he endured physical assault and the extortion of his family, requiring subsequent hospital treatment. Less than a month later, on November 16, 2019, the group struck again in Westchester, this time impersonating DEA agents to kidnap a man from his home. Two additional victims were forced into the basement, held at gunpoint while the conspirators ransacked the residence for cash and jewelry.

Their ambition didn’t end there. On December 11, 2019, Williams and La attempted a third kidnapping in South Holland. However, their plans were thwarted when the intended victim swiftly dialed 911, summoning the South Holland Police Department before the abduction could be completed. This led to the immediate arrest of Williams and La as they attempted to flee the scene. The botched attempt effectively brought the reign of terror to an end.

The jury found Williams guilty of participating in the kidnapping conspiracy, the attempted kidnapping in South Holland, and individual kidnapping counts related to the Naperville and Westchester incidents. Adding to his legal woes, Williams was also convicted of falsely impersonating a federal law enforcement officer. La faced convictions for participating in the kidnapping conspiracy and illegal firearm possession. Both men now face a maximum sentence of life in federal prison, with sentencing dates yet to be determined.

Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, Morris Pasqual, and FBI Special Agent-in-Charge, Robert W. “Wes” Wheeler, Jr., announced the convictions. The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the Naperville Police Department, Westchester Police Department, South Holland Police Department, Chicago Police Department, the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jared C. Jodrey, Corey B. Rubenstein, and Kate McClelland are prosecuting the case.

This wasn’t a solo operation. Ivan Ayers, 36, of Chicago, previously pleaded guilty to participating in the kidnapping conspiracy, and Jonathan Vargas, 38, of Chicago, admitted to kidnapping the initial victim in Naperville. Both Ayers and Vargas are currently awaiting sentencing, suggesting a wider network of individuals involved in this calculated campaign of fear and violence. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it moves toward final sentencing.
