New York – The Office of Special Investigation (OSI) under Attorney General Letitia James has initiated a probe into the fatal shooting of Emilson Joan Ordoñez-Banegas by members of the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD).
On July 13, 2025, in Centereach, SCPD officers responded to a report of an assault with a knife. Upon arrival, they found Mr. Ordoñez-Banegas with injuries to his hand and neck. While EMTs attended to the victim, Mr. Ordoñez-Banegas reportedly moved towards him wielding what seemed like a knife. An officer then discharged their weapon, killing the man. He was rushed to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. A knife was recovered at the scene.
Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is tasked with reviewing every incident involving potential police-induced fatalities. This investigation follows the protocol that requires a full probe if an officer’s actions are suspected of causing death, regardless of whether the officer is on or off duty, and irrespective of the deceased’s armed status or custody status.
