Swansea Felon Faces Ten Years for Gun Possession After Fatal Crash

GRIM CITY, ILLINOIS — A chilling case of firearms possession by a felon has been brought to the fore as Eric L. Eiskant, 33, from Swansea, Illinois, faces a federal charge for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. The U.S. District Court in East St. Louis has ordered Eiskant to be detained without bond pending indictment.

Eiskant’s alleged violation dates back to January 20, 2017, when he was involved in a fatal car accident at the intersection of St. Clair Avenue and 79th Street in East St. Louis. The tragedy underscored the dangers posed by gun possession among felons, as Eiskant now faces up to ten years in prison if convicted.

The charge comes with serious penalties: a fine up to $250,000 and a term of supervised release of up to three years. A federal criminal complaint is a formal charge that outlines the essential facts of an offense, and under our legal system, Eiskant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The investigation into this case is ongoing and being led by the Illinois State Police with support from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant United States Attorney Laura V. Reppert has been assigned to handle the prosecution.

Eiskant’s fate now rests in the hands of the court, as the justice system strives for a fair and just resolution to this grim incident.
