Grasping a grim narrative, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois, Stephen R. Wigginton, announced the sentencing of Steven L. Carson. The 27-year-old St. Charles, Missouri native has been locked away for 30 months following his conviction on a firearm charge.
Carson’s journey to federal prison began when he pleaded guilty on October 15, 2014, in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis, Illinois. The plea deal came after Carson was caught red-handed with a .40 caliber semi-automatic pistol on May 6, 2012. The arrest occurred as Carson fled the Pink Slip Topless Club in Brooklyn, Illinois.
Carson’s criminal history did not start with firearms. He had previously been convicted of 1st Degree Burglary in 2005, a felony offense that originated in St. Louis County, Missouri.
The investigation that led to Carson’s downfall was a collaborative effort by the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). Assistant United States Attorneys Daniel T. Kapsak and Robert L. Garrison took the case to prosecution with unwavering determination.
As the gritty facts of the crime were laid bare, it became clear that this was not just another firearms possession charge. It was a story of repeated criminal behavior and the consequences faced by those who do not heed the law’s warnings.
The sentence handed down on Friday, February 20, 2015, serves as a stark reminder to all that the justice system will not tolerate such violations of its laws, particularly when it comes to firearms, which can bring untold harm to communities across America.
