Sean Okrzesik, Identity Theft, New York 2022

Syracuse native Sean Okrzesik, 34, has admitted to stealing $103,798.77 in Supplemental Security Income benefits by exploiting the identities of vulnerable Americans he was sworn to help. Okrzesik, a former employee at the Social Security Administration’s Syracuse District Office, used the names and Social Security numbers of SSI beneficiaries and their representative payees to open fraudulent bank accounts and reroute federal payments.

Between February 2020 and February 2021, Okrzesik systematically siphoned government funds meant for the elderly and disabled—people living on the brink—into accounts he controlled. His guilty plea confirms he used stolen identities to create financial pipelines, diverting taxpayer-funded support to fuel a personal spending spree that included high-end video gaming equipment, a custom-tailored suit, luxury jewelry, and airline tickets to the Caribbean.

The theft wasn’t just bureaucratic betrayal—it was cold, calculated greed. Okrzesik didn’t stop at luxury buys. He also funneled stolen SSI money into online gambling accounts, turning a federal safety net into a personal betting fund. The victims? Some of the nation’s most financially fragile citizens, many with disabilities or living in poverty.

Charged with two counts of theft of government property and one count of aggravated identity theft, Okrzesik now faces up to 10 years in prison on the theft charges—plus a mandatory two-year sentence for identity theft that must run consecutively. He also risks a $250,000 fine and up to three years of supervised release following any prison term. Sentencing is set for March 16, 2022, in Utica before U.S. District Judge David N. Hurd.

The case was cracked by investigators from the Social Security Administration, Office of the Inspector General, who traced the illicit flow of funds through the very system Okrzesik was trusted to uphold. Prosecution was handled by Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Adrian S. LaRochelle, under the oversight of United States Attorney Carla B. Freedman and SSA-OIG Special Agent in Charge John F. Grasso.

Okrzesik’s fall from public servant to federal defendant underscores a sickening breach of trust. He didn’t just break the law—he weaponized his position against the people who needed protection. Now, he’ll answer for turning Social Security into personal security, lining his pockets while others struggled to survive.
