Alaa Hasan Qalb Allooz, Stalking, Connecticut 2019

A Syrian national was charged with violating a protective order, officials announced on February 5, 2019.

Alaa Hasan Qalb Allooz, 34, was indicted by a federal grand jury in New Haven, Connecticut, on one count of stalking, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office for the District of Connecticut.

The indictment alleges that Allooz repeatedly contacted his ex-wife despite a protective order, which was issued in July 2017 after his ex-wife filed a petition for dissolution of marriage due to incidents of domestic violence.

Allooz, who has been in state and federal custody since January 10, 2017, pleaded not guilty to the charge in U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert M. Spector’s court.

According to court documents, Allooz’s ex-wife filed a petition for dissolution of marriage in April 2017, citing incidents of domestic violence and state arrests for risk of injury, assault, breach of peace, and violation of a protective order offenses.

Allooz’s ex-wife obtained a Standing Criminal Protective Order in July 2017, which prohibited him from contacting her. However, Allooz continued to harass and threaten her, allegedly making multiple phone calls and sending letters and emails while he was detained in ICE custody.

If convicted, Allooz faces a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of one year and a maximum term of imprisonment of five years.

U.S. Attorney John H. Durham emphasized that an indictment is not evidence of guilt and that charges are only allegations until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas P. Morabito.
