BILLINGS – A Washington man’s deadly game of fentanyl trafficking has landed him a 11-year prison sentence, to be followed by five years of supervised release, after a routine traffic stop in Columbus.
Anthony Omarel Kenner, 31, of Tacoma, Washington, pleaded guilty in December 2023 to possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
Kenner’s guilty plea came after a search warrant was executed on his vehicle in March 2022, revealing a backpack containing cocaine, fentanyl and a loaded, stolen .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol in the trunk.
The traffic stop that led to Kenner’s downfall was sparked by law enforcement’s suspicions of drugs in the vehicle based on conflicting stories from Kenner and his passenger, along with the presence of drug paraphernalia.
Kenner’s history of felony convictions made him prohibited from possessing a firearm, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kelsey M. Hendricks and Thomas K. Godfrey prosecuted the case with the help of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Columbus Police Department.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities across the United States.
U.S. District Judge Dana L. Christensen presided over the case, handing down the 11-year prison sentence and five years of supervised release to Kenner.
