Tahlequah, Oklahoma – The gritty streets of Muskogee were shaken as Misty Dawn Burton, 23, from Tahlequah, Oklahoma, pleaded guilty to a severe charge: Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of Drug Trafficking. This admission comes with a heavy price tag—Burton now faces at least five years behind bars and a financial penalty upwards of $250,000.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma dropped this bombshell, revealing Burton’s direct involvement in firearm usage to facilitate drug trafficking activities. The charges are the culmination of an extensive investigation led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department.
The case traces back to a March 19, 2013 incident within the Eastern District of Oklahoma, where Burton was alleged to have knowingly possessed a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. That crime was Distribution of Oxycodone—a substance that has plagued communities across the country.
Presiding over the hearings was the Honorable Kimberly E. West, Magistrate Judge at the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma in Muskogee. Representing the United States was Assistant United States Attorney Kyle Waters, who delivered a stern reminder that justice would be served.
Burton’s indictment came back in September 2014, marking an early chapter in this ongoing battle against drug trafficking and firearm misuse. The severity of her crime underscores the determination of law enforcement to crack down on such activities that threaten public safety.
