Talana Francine Standing Bear Sentenced for Fraudulent Claims

GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: In a stunning turn of events, Talana Francine Standing Bear, 40, from Wanblee, South Dakota, was sentenced for submitting fraudulent statements to the Social Security Administration. The sentence handed down by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken on January 30, 2023, came after Standing Bear pleaded guilty to the charges in July 2022.

Standing Bear faced a lengthy prison term and substantial fines for her deception, but was sentenced to time already served, two years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Additionally, she must pay back $14,241.65 in restitution.

The conviction stemmed from Standing Bear’s false statements on documentation related to her minor child’s Social Security disability income. She fraudulently claimed the funds were for her child, but instead pocketed $13,695.65 in Title XVI Supplemental Security Income and another $546 under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

U.S. Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced the sentencing, noting that Standing Bear’s actions not only defrauded the government but also put her own interests above those of her child. The investigation was conducted by the Office of the Inspector General – Social Security Administration, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Heather Sazama handling the prosecution.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by individuals who engage in fraudulent activities at the expense of government programs designed to assist those in need. It also highlights the dedication of federal law enforcement and prosecutors in combating such crimes.
