Tallmadge Embroiled in Brawl at New York City Hall

January 10, 1844, was a day that will not soon be forgotten in the halls of New York City’s municipal government. Alderman Thomas Tallmadge was at the center of a heated brawl at City Hall, surrounded by his colleagues, including Purdy and Rawson. The altercation occurred on the previous day’s proceedings, which had been marked by several interruptions due to loud outbursts from the audience. The Honorable Judge, speaking with more than his usual emphasis, noted that such disruptions were not only unnecessary but also a breach of decency and propriety. He stated that perfect order must be maintained, as any other conduct would be deemed utterly unacceptable by the community. However, the judge publicly announced that the court would not tolerate such disruptions in the future, despite the fact that the disturbance had been sparked by the audience’s reactions to a particularly inflammatory exhibit.
