In a shocking display of political favoritism, the group’s leaders were suspected of receiving a majority of votes in the Council of Supervisors through questionable means. Mysterious favors and clandestine deals had apparently secured their positions, while those who had bravely fought for American independence were being pushed out of office to make way for these unscrupulous individuals. The revolution’s heroes were being replaced by those who had, in fact, led the enemy through the country and plundered our besieged villages under the guise of British cannon fire.
