A Tampa man has been charged with a slew of federal crimes, including conspiracy and wire fraud, in connection with a military recruitment scheme.
Travis Devall, 47, is accused of falsely reporting that he had recruited numerous individuals into the United States Army National Guard between September 2006 and July 2010.
According to the indictment, Devall, who served as a Recruitment Assistant under the Guard Recruiting Assistance Program, earned substantial bonus payments for the enlistment of recruits he claimed to have recruited, but never actually did.
The indictment alleges that Devall’s false statements resulted in the theft of government property and funds, and that he committed aggravated identity theft.
Devall faces a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison for conspiracy, 20 years for each wire fraud count, 10 years for theft of government property, and a mandatory 2 years for aggravated identity theft, if convicted.
The indictment also seeks a money judgment of approximately $78,000, the proceeds of the charged criminal conduct.
Devall’s case was investigated by the United States Army Criminal Identification Division and will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jay L. Hoffer.
It’s worth noting that an indictment is merely a formal charge, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
